Bohemian Switzerland National Park (Narodni Park Ceske Svycarsko)

Pražská, Krásná Lípa, Jetřichovice, Bohemian Switzerland National Park, 405 02

The Basics

The most popular attraction in Bohemian Switzerland National Park is Pravcicka Brana (Pravcicka Gate), Europe’s largest sandstone arch, standing 52 feet (16 meters) high. Don’t miss the lookout points near Jetrichovice, including Mary’s Rock—which is more than 600 steps to the top. The main village in the park is the picturesque Hrensko, which is worth a visit in its own right. Located north of Prague along the German border, you can visit the park on a tour from either Prague or Dresden, perhaps including a stop at the Saxon Switzerland National Park in Germany as well.

My tour guide, Pavla, was the best and had so many stories and interesting facts about everywhere we went. She grew up in Czechia so she knew so much about the area and gave us the best experience. The area was so beautiful, this was a once in a lifetime trip. If you’re going to Prague you can’t miss out on this tour! It was the best.

The National Park is huge! Very pretty and highly recommend if you have extra time during your Prague stay and want to do something different. This is a very long day with about 11-12 miles of walking. Marek was a great guide. Lunch was very good too. Wear shoes with good grips (tennis shoes are fine).

Bohemian Switzerland national park Private day trip with Lunch and Boat ride
My partner and I booked a personal couple trip to Bohemian Saxon Switzerland national park from Prague. Our tour guide was Michal, we started our day slightly early in the morning at 6.30 am which we think was the best decision. Michal arrived to pick us up from our hotel, his SUV was very clean and comfortable. He was very friendly and knowledgeable about the area. We very much enjoyed the trip talking about history, culture and exploring the natural beauty.

Martin was a GREAT guide. He was very knowledgeable about the national park and Czech Republic which made the experience informative, yet very fun. I opted for the harder one and I am very glad I did because the bridge was beautiful with mist. Also, the lunch included is very delicious! Well worth the price!

Great trip! No one else had booked on the tour but the company upheld the reservation for me. I ended up getting a private tour at the same price! Plenty of snacks and stops on the way&back. The guide, Marek, was incredibly knowledgeable, friendly and easy-going - likely the best guide I’ve ever had on a Viator trip. Beautiful sights and very relaxing for the type of trip I selected! Highly recommend!

Bohemian and Saxon Switzerland National Park Day Trip from Prague - Best Reviews
Marek, our tour guide, was excellent and the hikes/scenery were wonderful. Marie was prompt, efficient, kind, and knowledgeable. He seemed to care very much about our experience on the trip and was very welcoming. His service was great throughout the trip (he never seemed to get tired, even after a long day). Both hikes were filled with great views. The sandstone rocks are amazing. The first hike was longer and more challenging than the second. It wasn’t too challenging but certainly was a lot if stairs and i would strongly good hiking boots/shoes. It had sprinkled before our hike so stairs and rocks can be slippery. The lunch in between was included and consisted of traditional CZK fare. All six people on our tour were very happy with the meals. Overall, a great experience and we would highly recommend it!

The hike was amazing, the most beautiful views I've ever seen! Our guide, Marek, was perfect - very nice, helpful and kind, he took care of everything for us and had lots of interesting information about every little thing we saw on our way or asked him. The hike itself was not as hard as they advertise it, there's a couple of hours of a steep hill to climb (but not too hard at all), and the rest is very easy - and the beautiful views are so worth it. The tour was just us and one other couple, so it was basically a private tour, and Marek was so kind and friendly it really felt like a group of friends traveling.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Color-coded hiking trails depart from Hrensko and Jetrichovice.

  • Pravcicka Brana is about an hour’s walk from Hrensko along Gabriel’s Trail.

  • The park features an “upside-down” climate, which means that alpine and subalpine species are found thriving in river canyons and gorges, while higher slopes are home to species that are typically found in warmer climates.

  • Pravcicka Brana and the park’s other main attractions are not accessible to wheelchair users.

How to Get to There

Without your own transportation, the best way to reach Bohemian Switzerland National Park is by taking the train to Decin, and from there catching a bus to Hrensko or Jetrichovice. Another option is to take the train to the village of Schona and then catch a ferry to Hrensko.

When to Get There

Bohemian Switzerland National Park is open year-round, though crowds are sparser in the winter months, when the weather can be less predictable. Outdoor activities are especially popular in the spring, summer and fall, as are boat rides on the Kamenice River, which are not possible in the winter.

Rock Formations in Bohemian Switzerland National Park

In addition to the Pravcicka Brana, you’ll find fascinating sandstone rock formations throughout Bohemian Switzerland National Park—all of which are part of a larger geological formation known as the Elbe Sandstones. This makes the park especially popular with rock climbers. In fact the Fortress route, which was first climbed in 1888, was the first recreational rock climb in what is now the Czech Republic.
