A helmet and two wheels is all you need to discover the best of these cycle-friendly cities.
Kunsthal Charlottenborg is housed in a Dutch-inspired baroque palace in downtown Copenhagen. The palace was built in the late 17th century for wealthy Copenhagener (and illegitimate son of the King) Frederik Gyldenløve, and was then bought by the Queen Dowager Charlotte Amalie in 1700. The palace has carried her name ever since. Visitors can enjoy the contemporary art exhibits that are housed in a separate pavilion, built in 1883.
The gallery is famous for its annual Spring Exhibition – held since 1857 – that anyone from around the world can enter. The buildings are also home to the Danish Art Library. The gallery holds regular special events, from artist talks to concerts and video screenings.
*Entry to the gallery is via paid ticket. *Visitors can get free admission with the Copenhagen card. *There’s an art cinema, bookshop and café/bar on site.
Kunsthal Charlottenborg is located at 2 Nyhavn in downtown Copenhagen. The closest metro station is Kongens Nytorv. Boat tours of the city’s waterways come and go from the docks at Nyhavn, and the gallery is walking distance away from other important sites in town, such as the King’s Square (Kongens Nytorv).
The gallery is open all year round every day except Monday. The most popular time to visit is during the annual Spring Exhibition (held in February-March) that highlights the work of emerging artists.
