The basics

Established by banker Johann Friedrich Städel in 1815, the Städel Museum is Germany’s oldest museum foundation. Its collection of European art spans hundreds of years, from the Old Masters to the modern day; following an expansion in 2012, it has additional, luminous gallery spaces devoted to a contemporary collection. Highlights of its holdings range from canvases by Botticelli, Rembrandt, and Vermeer to masterworks by Picasso, Bacon, Richter, and Klein.

The Städel Museum can be explored on Frankfurt walking tours, and can be glimpsed during river sightseeing trips. It’s also easy to book tickets in advance and explore independently.
