The Basics

Many Manila city tours include a visit to Intramuros, and a walking tour is a popular way to explore the many historic attractions within the walls. Highlights include the mighty waterfront Fort Santiago, home to the Rizal Shrine, a tribute to Philippine national hero, Jose Rizal; San Agustin Church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the oldest churches in the country; the 16th-century Manila Cathedral; and the fascinating Casa Manila Museum. Leave plenty of time to browse the souvenir and handicraft shops, and enjoy a coffee at one of the lively cafés, too. Some excursions combine a tour of the city with an evening dinner cruise.

It’s worth it
Highly recommend as it covers a lot of ground. Not only were the pre-planned destinations worth it, but the views in transit as well. The driver and operator were flexible to accommodate our preferences such as being back at our hotel at a specific time.

Experience Intramuros with Bamboo Bicycle - Ecotours
We took the afternoon with the tour guide Russel. He was very freidnyl and knowledgable, made the tour fun as well by injecting some humor. We took the full tour so we saw about 6 or 7 historical sites I believe. It was nice getting to the sites on bike, nice little breeze from the hot sun. You also were given ample time at each stop to take pictures. At the end the cold towel and ice cream was nice. The tour was great, I would highly reccomend anyone wanted to tour around the intramuros area.

Intramuros: History of Old Manila | Manila Walking Tours
Excellent walking tour by a guide who was well-informed and spoke fluently in English. Very interesting history of the Old Manila. The Fort was pretty and well-maintained and contains artifacts related to the national hero, Jose Rizal, and others. The snacks provided from the street vendors, taho and ice cream, were delicious and fresh! Highly recommended.

Intramuros: History of Old Manila | Manila Walking Tours with Transportation
We had a great tour with Andrei. He was both knowledgeable and fun. We learned a lot about the history of Manila. The only negative was the horse drawn carriage ride (not with Andrei), because we couldn't hear what the driver was saying and had difficulty seeing what he was pointing to. Overall, however, a great tour.

Private Half-Day Makati (Old Manila) with Intramuros
We had an amazing tour of Old Manila with Jonas! From start to finish this tour was fantastic. He picked us up promptly with a sign from the port exit. We had a sweet driver, a nice clean van and the best tour guide. Jonas was very educated and explained with great detail the history of Manila to us. We visited many interesting locations and as everyone was walking around in a big ship tour group we had an absolutely brilliant tour just for the two of us. I highly recommend booking this private tour. It was well worth the money. Thank you very much Jonas for your thoughtfulness and wonderful professionalism. We had a great day in Manila!

Walled City of Intramuros

Spanish governor Miguel Lopez de Legaspi founded the walled city of Intramuros in 1571. At the time, it was the entire city of Manila. With its 20-foot-high (6 meter) walls, moats on all sides, and seven fortified gateways, the 163-acre (66-hectare) citadel was impenetrable. However, the city sustained considerable damage during World War II bombings and extensive restoration work has since taken place on the walls, city gates, and many of the historic buildings.
