The Basics

Many Manila city tours include a visit to Intramuros, and a walking tour is a popular way to explore the many historic attractions within the walls. Highlights include the mighty waterfront Fort Santiago, home to the Rizal Shrine, a tribute to Philippine national hero, Jose Rizal; San Agustin Church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the oldest churches in the country; the 16th-century Manila Cathedral; and the fascinating Casa Manila Museum. Leave plenty of time to browse the souvenir and handicraft shops, and enjoy a coffee at one of the lively cafés, too. Some excursions combine a tour of the city with an evening dinner cruise.

Manila Old and New: Sightseeing Tour Including Intramuros and Fort Santiago
What was supposed to be a group tour became a private tour as CoViD19 drove away tourists. Lucky for us as we had Malou, the guide & Ronnie, the driver to ourselves in a Toyota HiAce ac Van as they brought us around Manila, Makati, Pasay, BGC & Intramuros.

Experience Intramuros with Bamboo Bicycle - Ecotours
This tour was GREAT. My guide was Marlowe and he did a fantastic job. Very knowledgeable. It was the right amount of time and all the sites were interesting. One person in my group was not comfortable with a bike and they had a covered buggy that she could get in. The complimentary water and sweet treat were a great addition.

Intramuros: History of Old Manila | Manila Walking Tours (with transportation)
We had a great tour with Andrei. He was both knowledgeable and fun. We learned a lot about the history of Manila. The only negative was the horse drawn carriage ride (not with Andrei), because we couldn't hear what the driver was saying and had difficulty seeing what he was pointing to. Overall, however, a great tour.

A Very Good Introduction to Colonial History

Manila Old and New: Sightseeing Tour Including Intramuros and Fort Santiago
If you have limited time in Manila but want a short introduction to the colonial history of the area, this would be a good choice. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and provided some interesting insights to the various places we visited. As someone interested in the history of the Philippines, it was raised more questions for me to look into. My teens also found it interesting and informative.

Intramuros: History of Old Manila | Manila Walking Tours (with transportation)
We had a 17 hour layover in Manila on our trip home from Bali. So I decide to "Not Skip Manila" and do the Intramuros Tour. The tour guide Andre' was fantastic and he was full of fun facts. He was so knowledgeable about the history of Manila. The bonus was the ice cream treat. I would recommend this tour to anyone who has a long layover in Manila.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Parts of Intramuros are pedestrianized, but pedicabs and horse-drawn carriages (calesas) are also popular ways to get around.

  • There is no admission to enter the Intramuros district, but attractions, such as Fort Santiago and San Agustin, do charge a small entrance fee.

  • Wear comfortable shoes—roads can be uneven around the historic district.

  • There are numerous shops, cafés, and restaurants located in and around the walled district.

Make an early start to avoid the heat and the crowds, as you’ll likely be doing a lot of walking. While it’s possible to visit Intramuros at any time, most attractions close around 6pm. Be aware that museums are typically closed Mondays.

Walled City of Intramuros

Spanish governor Miguel Lopez de Legaspi founded the walled city of Intramuros in 1571. At the time, it was the entire city of Manila. With its 20-foot-high (6 meter) walls, moats on all sides, and seven fortified gateways, the 163-acre (66-hectare) citadel was impenetrable. However, the city sustained considerable damage during World War II bombings and extensive restoration work has since taken place on the walls, city gates, and many of the historic buildings.
