This full-day island tour begins at München Hauptbahnhof, the main railway station in the city of Munich. Travel by train to Bavaria’s largest lake—Lake Chiemsee—home of one of King Ludwig II’s elaborate homes, Herrenchiemsee Palace.

This lavish castle is located on an island in the Chiemsee. Admire the incredible backdrop of majestic Bavarian lakes and mountains. Head inside for a guided walking tour of the large staterooms: the State Staircase, the State Bedroom and the Great Hall of Mirrors, plus the king's own rooms in the intimate Small Apartment, designed in the French rococo style. The palace is extravagance at its finest, with elegant gardens and walkways and ornate interiors of gold, glass, and porcelain.

After the tour, take a boat ride (own expense) across the lake to the island of Frauenchiemsee, the second largest of the three islands in the Chiemsee. Explore the island and be sure to stop at the historic Benedictine convent, which dates back to the first century.

The tour ends with a return trip to Munich.

Lovely day trip

We enjoyed meeting people on our tour from around the world as well as from home! The small train and boat ride to the islands made this a unique experience. We really enjoyed visiting the Women’s Island as well as Herrenchiemsee Palace. It was a lovely day, and the scenery was beautiful! Our guide, Stephanie was very personable and made everyone feel welcome.

Unorganized

We went on this tour feeling we didn't have to worry about time management. Our guide was wonderful Susanne. The company that was extremely unorganized. Gave an address but not there name that was on the building. Said in the instructions to look for lots of windows.??? There was lots of people everyone wasn't sure where to go. Then needed sandwich signs to display each tour. Having a back issue we had to stand for 2 hours waiting for a train. I could have done this tour on my own if l wanted to be frustrated. We ended up losing our guild and there was another family who was lost with us. The train should be scheduled to people on tour. Not just being spread out all over. I would suggest to have colored stickers on so they guild could at least recognize her tour. We also where told we had an hour on the female island. It was 30 mins and didn't have anytime to go to the gift shop just the church. The palace itself was beautiful and so was the second island.

Hello Darlene, thanks for your honest comments on our tour. We very much apologize if the tour was not up to the quality you expected. We apologize that the train heading to the palace was a little crowded, which lead to the seating situation not being ideal, but this sadly is not in our own hands. If you are back to Munich, we happily would invite on a complimentary tour, to show you this is not the level of quality we strive for. Thanks for your trust & understanding.

Do it yourself!!!

We could have done this trip ourselves using our 9 euro travel card and just getting off the train and paying the entrance fees No value for money
icon Response from Host , Jul 2022
Hello Colin, thanks for your honest comments on our tour. The 9€ ticket is something that has been around in Germany very recently, as sure, with this ticket you could have travelled to Herrenchiemsee palace yourself. The advantage with the tour is that you have a knowledgeable guide with you that keeps the itinerary together, as not every traveler on our tour feels confident enough to travel to this place by themselves. If you are able to travel there by yourself, I do not know why you wanted to attend our tour? I am sorry that the tour did not live up to the quality you expected. We wish you all the best for your upcoming travels.

Michelle was our tour guide, knowledgeable, fun day all in all. The area is beautiful. It’s a full day…train ride, short steam train trip, boat ride and enough time for snacking and a meal on the island!

Great trip out to Herrenchiemsee!

We had a great time with our guide, Stephanie. She had her hands full with managing a group composed of people with differing walking abilities but she did it well. Stephanie was very knowledgeable about the places we saw, the people that lived there, and the events that occurred around them. I will say, this is a walking tour. So, if you have limitations in that area, maybe don't book yourself on this tour. The walking is mostly flat, but you still need to be able to walk at a decent pace. If you have mobility issues, it is possible to do this excursion yourself from Munich and then you can take the horse-drawn transportation option from the docks to the palace. Due to the extra wait times for this option, it's not really feasable for a group excursion like this one. As there is a guided tour on site not let by the guide from this tour company, you would still get the same experience for the palace portion of this excursion. I also recommend bringing water and sunscreen as you will be out in the sun quite a bit (depending on what season you're traveling). There are several different places to buy food and water but at least on the Island with the palace, those places only accepted cash.

One of the best days/activities of our trip

I really want to give this a 5 star review. It was our favorite experience in Bavaria (much better than Neuschwanstein IMO, but do both of you can just for the scenery). And our guide Michelle was lovely and filled with information/stories about the palace and King Ludwig II. After this tour I had a much more nuanced understanding of him than the previous “mad king” (which evoked Game of Thrones mental imagery). I am docking one star because I was disappointed at the lack of transparency of the pricing. Taking the boat ride is critical to this tour as it’s the only way to get to the islands. This at least should be included in the ticket price. It was an unpleasant surprise to have to pay an additional 23 euros pp to cover the cost of the boat trip and palace tour when we went to check in. Had it been included in the tour price that wouldn’t have been a problem. The palace tour is 100% worth it by the way if you’re considering skipping it. Another bit of feedback is to skip the monastery in order to give more time for the second island Frauemchiemsee. The palace was wonderful but we all wished we had more than one hour at the second island to explore all the quaint alleyways and stunning views of the lake and mountains.

We went on a rainy day, but the castle, monastery, and nunnery were still lovely and a lot less crowded than they usually would be. Our tour guide Susanna was very knowledgeable and helpful, really going above and beyond during our tour.

The tour guide was very knowledgeable and really told the story well. The only issue was the tour guide didn't have great time management and we ended up back in Munich much later than expected. Overall I wouldn't let the time issue hold me up from recommending this to anyone.

Maxine our tour guide was wonderful, explaining every step of the way. The castle is awesome and the steam train ride very quaint. The boat trip across to both islands was lovely. Highly recommend a hat and sunscreen if going in the summer or hot weather. All in all a great day out.

A wonderful day out from Munich...the Palace was all that I expected and the second island was a pleasant, unexpected experience. And our guide, Maxine, could not have been better...well-informed and very, very helpful when we had a slight hitch in plans.

The day was superb and the sights were too. The day would have been better had we not been shepherded to an inferior restaurant for lunch when there were clearly choices. Also the promised free time never came to pass as we were rushed off the island and back to wait in a cafe near Prien station. Why was that?

Great trip. You get to see another side of Munich and gain further insight into King Ludwig 2. Patrick our guide looked after us very well. It is a long day and a bit drawn out but that is due to the train schedule. Highly recommend it.
