By the summer of 1940, Mauthausen Concentration Camp had become one of the largest labor camp complexes in the German-occupied part of Europe. Some 200,000 people are thought to have been imprisoned at Mauthausen between 1938 and 1945, and about half of them lost their lives. Mauthausen was the last camp complex to be liberated by the Allies.

At the meeting point climb aboard your comfortable tour vehicle, meet your friendly English-speaking tour escort and become acquainted with the history of Mauthausen Memorial during the ride from Vienna. Relax as you journey through the countryside of Lower and Upper Austria.

Arrive at Mauthausen Memorial, a building that stands on the site of the former Mauthausen Concentration Camp. Grab your audio guide (available in 11 languages) and begin touring independently through the grounds. See Wiener-Graben quarry, the prisoners’ barracks, the so-called 'Stairs of Death,' SS-quarters, gas chamber, camp prison and the Mauthausen Museum for more historical background on the camp and WWII.

Excellent! Ii was an unforgettable experience and the guide was very well informed. We even reached Vienna earlier than supposed, and I could go and visit National Opera and the Library after the trip to Mauthausen! I shall recommend this to my friends.

Tom was an excellent guide. When he greeted us he was friendly and inviting. He spoke top notch English on the way there giving us background information about the camps. He communicated well asking us about our backgrounds and shared his interesting life story . He did his best to answer our questions and we knew much more about the camp and Vienna as a result.

The trip was good but over priced. Charged £100 for 15 month child then sent bill €100 for cleaning the seat he was sat in. Yes he was a bit sick but I spent 30 minutes cleaning and they didn’t tell me there would be a charge the emailed 8 days later with no receipt for cleaning attached. Only trip that has charged to take a baby.

A very moving and somber experience

The trip was well organised- we were pick up was timeous. Our driver was very knowledgeable about the history of the camp and the events surrounding it. The actual camp was unbelievable- they have tried to keep it as original as they could. It was a eye opener for us. Nothing prepares you for the reality. They even have the original gas chambers and incinerators. 😢

Thoughtful and reflective - a valuable day's journey

The day was overcast and very cold and showery - which matches the mood of this place. It seems strange to use positive words for such a sombre experience - such as enjoyable. And yet there is something to feel positive about - the triumph of the human spirit perhaps? Also the fact that this place has been well preserved to this present day as a grim reminder of what we humans can do to each other in the name of government and/or policy. What should always come first is our commitment to humanity and all that entails. The audio guide is very good. There are some very good sculpted monuments throughout the grounds and many of the buildings are well maintained and intact. There is also a very good museum section towards the end of the tour. The person who took us on the tour played us a dvd about the camp and the holocaust during the 2 hour bus drive to the monument. Other than that his role was simply to provide transport as, once you are at the site, you are alone with your audio guide.

Highly interesting visit. The guide was a mine of knowledge about the history of Austria and of its troubled relationship with Germany. I highly recommend you take the time to do such a visit. We owe it to our humanity.

We went to see a small plaque.

plaque was unveiled in recognition of the 450 Witnesses imprisoned by the Nazis in the Mauthausen and Gusen concentration camps in Austria. We saw the plaque and cried. There will come a time soon when this will be forgotten. But for now, visit and REMEMBER.

Great Tour Experience
Robert_M

Our tour guide was very knowledgeable of the history and culture of Austria and answered all questions. The passenger van was very clean. As a bonus the guide took all of us back to our respective hotels and for me my river cruise ship, which was not an easy task during Vienna rush hour traffic. This was an excellent tour and done in a very professional manner. I will recommend Viator for anyone seeking to book a tour. Thank you for your time.

Excellent Tour

Recently booked this tour and found both the tour and the guide to be of high quality and certainly worth committing a day of our holiday. Tom was excellent. Very informative on the drive out of Vienna and then back in also. His driving was safe and comfortable. On the outward journey Tom played a documentary on the history of the camp which was excellent and prepared us well for what we were going to see. Mauthausen is definitely worth a visit. The history is emotional. On the return journey we stopped off for lunch. which was very good. The small group atmosphere of the tour was pleasant unlike the larger tours which tend to be noisy and unpleasant at times. Highly Recommend

Awful service by Viator. The ticket/voucher did not state the meeting point but merely gave the address for the local agency. I tried calling the local agency many times on Friday but only got a voice recording. I arrived at the local agency office of Saturday (the day of the tour) to find it closed. Luckily my call was answered and i was directed to the meeting point. I had to take a further taxi to get there. The tour itself was great, though the 2.5 hours allocated was too short. I would suggest 3.5 hours. Markus was excellent.

Mauthausen is difficult to put into words. You can't call it a great day trip, using the word great seems wrong given the history of the site, but I am glad I went. I think it is important to be aware of this history, and it is a very moving experience that makes you really think about what we humans have done to each other in certain circumstances. Our guide, Flemming, gave an excellent tour during the trip from Vienna to Mauthausen and back again. At Mauthausen we were given audio guides and a map, which worked very well. This allowed each person or small group to go at their own pace, rather than need to stick with a large tour group which might move on before you were finished at a given site, and the time allotted to experience the camp was more than adequate. I have also been to Dachau, and Mauthausen is not as developed. They don't have as much reconstructed, particularly as regards interior furnishings, and the overall footprint of the Maulthausen memorial site is smaller. But Mauthausen is well done, and the room in the museum with the names of the known victims is particularly impactful, incredibly sobering. I strongly recommend this trip for anyone who feels it is important to remember and learn from history.

Basically the tour is that your are coached to the place and the entrance's ticket are included. But at the place you rely on the audioguides provided by the premise. So it's OK by the comfort of the transportation but nothing more.

Excellant dutch guide Tom. Comfortable bus and very good cafe for late lunch. As for the camp its well worth a visit to see what happened. I shant say it was a great trip because that is the wrong word but very eye opening to the nazi regime

Our guide Tom was very knowledgeable on Vienna as we departed the city on our way to Mauthausen. Our journey to Mauthausen didn't seem long and it helped to view the video on the memorial prior to arriving, there was much to see more than what we were able to take in, the only thing we weren't able to see was the stairs which happened to be closed being it was winter. If you visit Vienna, a day trip to Mauthausen should be one place to see not for young children.
